OUR STORY

Nomad Health Initiative was founded in 2022 by three young medical graduates who grew up within nomadic communities in Northern Kenya.

While interning at Marsabit County Referral Hospital, they witnessed a harsh reality—pastoralist children and mothers were being left behind in healthcare access. The challenges were complex: climate change, constant mobility, prolonged drought, under-resourced health systems, and insecurity were compounding the problem.

Motivated by the urgent need for a solution, they asked a powerful question: How can we leverage what already exists—people, knowledge, and technology—to deliver quality healthcare that moves with our communities, instead of leaving them behind?

In 2023, with support from D-Prize, they launched a pilot in Moyale Sub-County to test a culturally grounded, community-led health model tailored to the pastoral communities.

The pilot showed not only what’s possible, but also what’s necessary—for systems that center the lived realities of nomadic families. What began as a response to inequity is now a growing effort to reimagine healthcare for the last mile.
